Braga Trasformatori has decades of experience in manufacturing transformers in accordance with the European Standard IEC 61558-2-15 for the power supply of medical locations.

These are isolation transformers, single-phase or three-phase, intended for Group 2 medical locations, designed to form the IT system on the secondary side, with a nominal primary voltage not exceeding 1 kV AC and a nominal frequency not exceeding 500 Hz.

Typical applications requested by our customers include:

• Operating theatres and intervention areas.
• Intensive care and resuscitation units.

The rated power of these transformers — which we build to the highest safety and testing standards given their intended environment — ranges from 500 VA to 10 kVA.

Main construction features

• Double or reinforced insulation.
• Electrostatic shield between windings to reduce disturbances and contribute to protection.
• Impregnation and insulating materials to improve thermal dissipation and long-term reliability.
• Designed for continuous operation with low noise, suitable for sensitive environments.
• Thermal protection: on request, temperature sensors (e.g. PT100) or thermal contacts.

Why special construction is essential in medical environments

• Patient and operator safety. Galvanic separation and the electrostatic shield reduce network disturbances that could interfere with critical equipment.
• Service continuity. In environments where an interruption may have clinical impacts, the power supply must remain stable, reliable and monitored.
• Disturbance reduction. Filtering of surges and transients from the network improves the reliability of electromedical equipment and imaging systems.

Specific requirements for Group 2 medical locations

Medical locations are classified into groups based on risk and the invasiveness of procedures. Group 2 includes operating theatres and intensive care areas where intracardiac applications are possible. In these environments it is required to use:

• An IT-M system on the secondary of the isolation transformer to ensure continuity even in the presence of the first earth fault.
• Insulation monitoring of the circuit via a dedicated device with audible/visual indications.
• An equipotential bonding network and proper coordination of protective devices in accordance with current installation standards.
